Happy Apocalypse Day!!Happy Mayan Doomsday, all!!!
Suffice to say I managed to land in Holland alright and :icongellyh: and I have been having a fun time taking walks through freezing cold fog and eating oliebollen and generally being bang-up perfect examples of "alive".
Why so serious?
We also spent some time this evening listening to the voice auditions for Honour Amongst Thieves that I've received so far, and may I just say that a lot of the entries have been just SO amazing!! I'm seriously having a really hard time trying to choose between some of these voices, but I'm going to leave the auditions open until early January, so if we don't all die before the 22nd you've still got some time on your hands.
Our "Judging" faces.
I may have to make a compilation of some of the better ones ... seriously some amazing stuff. But now I stink from my 13-hour flight so I'
Life Update - HAT News, etc.Hullo my fellow Deviants,
It's about that time for a new journal entry, as a lot has happened since last I was seen lurking about this site. I have new Honour Amongst Thieves Questions and Answers podcasts, Amnesia videos, and photos, as well as news on my current job(s), and the results of :iconredeaddie:'s fantastic Louis cosplay. So how about I just start from the beginning?
Brendan Julian was over in Singapore for three weeks towards the end of my summer break, which was responsible for most of my absence. For those who don't yet know, he is the voice for Louis Despatis in my (as of yet) unfinished animation. Much fun was had. As well as dragging him all over the island and introducing him to all manner of wild and weird Asian cuisine, we also spent a lot of time at Universal Studios, Singapore, with my LASALLE besties for Livia's birthday. Brendan got to hug Reese's Pieces
Merry Christmas and SHIPS!!!I friggin' love this grey weather, like you have no idea. So I leap on any chance I get to go out into it, and as always I force :icongellyh: to come with me. Following some advice we went to the Maritime Museum in Amsterdam yesterday to see the LKJSDKLZDJLKS replica of the18th century East Indiaman Amsterdam.
Caution: Slippery when wet.
EEEEEEEEE SHIPS!!! Of course this totally counts as research for my animation major this year and everything,
The Captain gets all the best things.
Chillin' in the Captain's Cabin.
To the Captain's Command!
We found some BARRELS!!
Biggest goddamn barrels I've ever seen.
And also tried our hands at the guns.
Gellyh knows how to use a swivel cannon.
Evidently ... I don't.
But it was seriously cramped in there, especially in the guests' cabins for transporting important people.
No, I mean really, really cramped.
Fooling around top-side:
Fabulous view from up here, daaarling~
And then there was a gallery full
My ApologiesHello all,
Let me begin by first apologizing to those of you who have left me notes, comments, or questions over the past few weeks. I have been absent for DA for an extended period of time due to real life priorities, and the stress doesn't look as though it is about to relent. While I will try to get back on top of my deviations and replies here, it will be slow-going and I can't promise to be around regularly.
As well as rushing to meet deadlines for my animation, I have also been organizing and setting up the LASALLE Show with my classmates, and as class representative for 2D animation I have been required to make a daily appearance at my college. The LASALLE Show doubles as a showcase to display the best works amongst the different faculties of the college, as well as being a graduation show for those of us in the 3rd year, which I am. Honour Amongst Thieves has received a special display right at the entrance to the animation gallery, and I was occupied for the bett
Animation Progress ....So I've finally begun in-betweening James's introduction sequence ...
It's consisted of hours of listening to him scream "Oh BLOODY HELL" and "DAMN IT!" into my ear.
Shisha Pipes at Three A.M. ...There's nothing quite like sitting back on pillows in a dim room with painted murals and UV lights discussing the problems of the world and how we can change the future for the better through the aromatic smoke of several shisha pipes with complete strangers. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone.
I feel like I can change the world. Maybe not in big ways, but in small, baby steps. I want to finish this animation, I want to get my message out. I want to make a graphic novel that underlines current issues through the eyes of my characters; I want to make a difference. I feel justified in knowing I'm not the only one who thinks like this.
I want to change the world.
... Damn, this sounded so much better in my head at 3a.m. in the cafe toilets when I thought of it.
Back at LASALLEThat's right, after two eye-opening months, my stay at Ubisoft is over (... which is a shame, because they were offering a prize to the person who could prank their colleagues the best this April Fools!).
It was a great experience; I got the chance to work on multiple projects in the company, doing everything from technical drawings, character concepts, to storyboarding and illustrations. I was constantly challenged to produce faster and better work, including some digital and matte paintings, which I still struggle with immensely. By the end of the two months I was finally getting a handle on things, but alas, all good things must come to an end. I wish I could share some of my work with you, but I am sworn to confidentiality.
I made some good friends while I was there; the art director is a friend to the animation program leader at LASALLE, and he purposefully challenged me to start practicing digital painting. I was sat next to the senior storyboard and concept ar
Louis, Louis, Always Whining ..."I'm not whining, I'm complaining. Do you want to hear whining?" -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?featurelayer_detailpage&v=l8r7ZNrKxFI&listLv0aJNOpaJrotahQ1swwUQd8wjr9TfWVQ#t=450s
Okay, no, on a more serious note: I've just had to re-draw the last two days' worth of frames and in-betweens for Louis because I realized I'd been drawing him "wrong".
Throughout Louis's character progress he's undergone several changes, most based on my own personal decisions, but many were also due to feedback from you guys here on DA, and I realise now that the "Louis is too skinny I don't like it" comments got to me more than they should have.
What these people don't realize is that Louis is ridiculously tall and skinny on purpose: he's a cartoon. He's not meant to be realistic, he's meant to be an exaggeration of the flamboyant gay stereotype, the skinny French stereotype, and his design reflects his wiles and cunning when it comes to out-witting his opponents. Out of al
SW:tOR TUMBLR ACCOUNT!! Head on over!Hey guys and girls!
At long last, I've finally made a Tumblr account specifically for Star Wars: The Old Republic and ALL SWtOR-related sketches, doodles, and roleplay logs. All my roleplay logs will henceforth be uploaded there, so if you're a fan of following my characters' stories then that's the place to go from now on.
For those of you who missed the first link, here it is again: http://askvallaz.tumblr.com/
I'm still stumbling my way around the confusing site (seriously, it should be called Stumblr, not Tumblr ...) so following people or reblogging and all that stuff can wait for now. I also had some issues with HTML glitches so some of the writing logs have nice gaps between paragraphs, while others are ugly and clumped together. I'm sorry, but there doesn't seem to be anything I can do about it. Additionally, if any of the links on the sidebar are broken for the time being, it's
Apparently there's Drama on my page???Wow, so my tumblr followers told me about some drama going on my Archive Page for Raindrops.
A little amused but after checking I found that it was indeed true and a certain user ragequit on Raindrops due to the lack of updates. A couple of things I would like to address since I've been busy, I haven't checked DA in a while so I haven't been able to read all of the comments. SO!
1) This was really amusing to read on some level.
2) Thank you to everyone who defended me.
3) Sorry to those who agree
4) Thanks to the rest for understanding!
And most importantly!!! I mentioned in the past that my average speed for writing Raindrops is usually one chapter per year. Usually because life gets in the way like... work, and friends, and other interests. And just because I don't get to Raindrops doesn't mean that I've abandoned it. It just means that I haven't gotten to it. In fact, I've spent the last several weekends writing and rewriting the script for Chapter 8 (which is like the longest chapt
Raindrops Fans are Amazing...I mean...CRAZYI really mean it, you guys... I'm always impressed with how much support my fancomic gets. I still get tons of feedback from it all the time, and daily notes asking for its' update. Sometimes, I get notes from fans who are overly passionate, or maybe not so polite. Sometimes they are just awkward, albeit very charming...
But you guys...
You guys, THIS ONE.
This. TAKES. THE. CAKE. I don't even...
It was so unbelievable, I have to tell you.
So a couple of days ago I checked my DA Notes and there was a pile of messages waiting for me. I haven't been able to check DA often as of late due to work and the fact that my Computer has been dying and I've been trying to avoid using it as much as possible until my new Computer arrives. ANYWAY, I was surprised to find a note from my friend, masa-kocha. I opened it, and this is what it said:
She also happened to be my coworker, and sat like... right across from me. Curiouser and curiouser why she would note me instead of just asking me directly
My photography course at HogwartsUuuugh you guys, my sleep has been so terrible. I woke up out of a pretty entertaining dream, though.
I was taking a photography class at Hogwarts and Snape was our teacher. I think Ron and Harry might also have been in our class but I never did see them. Our assignment at the time was to get ten outstanding photographs of animals in their natural habitat and he told us we had to roll up our pant-legs and go wading in a swamp full of alligators and poisonous snakes if we hoped to get any good ones. He meant this literally. This was our assignment. (Oh, Snape! )
So I actually did it; I took off my shoes and wandered into the bog, dodging snakes and snapping away. I took so long about it that I missed the start of critique and I sort of ran into Snape with some of my classmates on a bridge while I was headed back to the castle. He was reviewing their photos (and grading ruthlessly, as he does). He saw me and said, "What are you doing? You knew we had critique."
I answered, "Yeah, I kn
Sup?Well, guys, update time.
Never thought I'd be a stranger to this place, but I'm just never around here anymore. Wouldn't you know it, this working business takes a lot of time and energy.
Work's been super fast-paced, intriguing, challenging. I don't believe the range of things I've worked on in the past two-point-five months. Traditional animation, Flash animation (oh god so much Flash animation), concept art (the funnest stuff of all, why am I even getting paid for this?), proposals, games, toys, icons, exactly one squillion in-game items, websites, user interfaces, and on and on. SO COOL. We seem to be short-staffed, or just generally over-burdened (the guys have told me this is pretty much the busiest they've seen the place), so I've been racing through the daily minefield of surprise deadlines to keep abreast of the big thundering monster ones. But it's the speed and the unknown schedule that makes every day interesting. And a complete blur afterwards. I am so l
Happy holidays and a happy new year!Happy holidays and a happy new year! Have a collection of GIFs about interspecies friendship and cuddles, followed by a touching comic.
I hope your computer doesn't crash by the amount of GIFs. D: Just wait for a minute until all have been loaded, it should work.
This eagle got its wings hurt badly and would never be able to fly. So the person there would take it for a flight like this.
A troggerel, or, unpopular opinion in bad poetry. In response to a certain series' popularity on tumblr, and many requests made....
I do not like you, Benny-Holmes,
Though acknowledging your fine cheekbones.
I do not like your Johnlock fans,
(though rather admire gay Moriarty's plans).
I do adore your awkward Martin,
But Bilbo is his finest castin'!
Inspector Lestrade is a true silver fox,
that "Not My Division" gif everywhere rocks!
Though Lara Pulver made a gorgeous Adler,
Her character arc was a sexist disaster.
And that Black Lotus Triad Chinese ninja assassin!?
OMG, what is this, a 1950s Tintin?
'Sherlock' your plots are just clever as can be,
and a twist! the setting's twenty-twelve AD!
Still I join not in your writers' adulation,
nor, post "Reichenbach", their vituperation...
Aye, Bundersnatch is a very fine actor -
I admired his turn as Frankenstein's Monster -
But BBC Sherlock does little for me
(btw that intro? sounds a lot like Ritchie).
I cannot quite twig why exactly this is,
But this whole fangirl favourite for me does n
What Doesn't Kill YouWell, howdy, guys!
Before I get to my update on how surgery went, I got to make an enormously futile attempt to thank you all for your incredible collective wave of stories, thoughts, and well-wishes on my previous post. I have so many people saying they believe in me I am now a minor deity. I shouldn't be surprised statistically, but I am aghast regardless at how many of you have immediate family and friends who've had cancer or indeed have had it yourselves. As I say, I've gotten off easy here, and my heart goes out to everybody that's had to grapple with far more serious cases, and especially to those who've lost dear ones. YOU are the brave sons n' daughters of beeches, you guys all blow my mind wide open. I'll tell you I was doing pretty good until about halfway through your messages, and then there was some sniffling. Hell's bells, guys, that was something. Thank you for every letter.
My thyroid is out and gone and lord knows where now. They removed it along with a
On the subject of Copyrights and ContentsI'd like to take this moment to address a very important issue within the art community, and this is Copy Rights.
Recently I had had a situation with a client that reminded me that both parties- the client AND the artist- have specific rights that need to be addressed at the time of creating a design and/or illustration. Both parties need to have a CLEAR understanding of their rights, and ask any and as many questions until they feel as if they have the right information. Assumption and dishonesty are not good business foundations, let alone become legal liability in the long run. Lying on any side is the most common action that leads to bigger situations that at time, will be dealt with legally.
From here on in, the "Client" is the commissioner, and the "Artist" is the person in charge of design, illustration, and/or color.
1) The difference between "content" and "product/property".
When someone commissions you for a design, you have many different types of ownership. The most common
Vampire CollegeThe other day, my dad handed me a printout of an article from a conservative website about going to college. Dad does this from time to time, I think because he suspects I'm a filthy liberal, and wants to send a few shots across the bow to see if I fire back. I usually don't, because I've been through enough warfare to have a better idea of when to pick my battles.
Well, I won't reference the article directly, but the gist of it was that college is a bit of a costly venture that doesn't always yield the results it promises for the price of admission, and may actually do more harm than good. (High schoolers, meditate on that for a minute, please)
Now, the article itself sort of descended into a screed about how colleges just crank out liberals anyway, and liberals tend to vote Democrat, and we should just bust the whole thing up because dear God, we need conservative voters or they'll have a WOMAN in the White House next...
...Which is unfortunate, because "liberal conspiracy" aside, I
