My Apologies

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 2, 2013, 10:13 AM

Hello all,

Let me begin by first apologizing to those of you who have left me notes, comments, or questions over the past few weeks. I have been absent for DA for an extended period of time due to real life priorities, and the stress doesn't look as though it is about to relent. While I will try to get back on top of my deviations and replies here, it will be slow-going and I can't promise to be around regularly.

As well as rushing to meet deadlines for my animation, I have also been organizing and setting up the LASALLE Show with my classmates, and as class representative for 2D animation I have been required to make a daily appearance at my college. The LASALLE Show doubles as a showcase to display the best works amongst the different faculties of the college, as well as being a graduation show for those of us in the 3rd year, which I am. Honour Amongst Thieves has received a special display right at the entrance to the animation gallery, and I was occupied for the better part of the week just trying to organize all of my images into a presentable display.

For anyone within Singapore considering LASALLE as a university possibility, the show is still open until May 5th, and I will be gallery sitting from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. this coming Monday, in the animation show.

Click on each image of a fullsized version.

While our actual graduation ceremony at LASALLE isn't until September, I have unofficially graduated, and as such I am also beginning the transition from student to employee. I have spent the past few weeks exploring possible job opportunities, and am busy with a private series of commissions I can't reveal more about at this time. I have also spent the past week or so searching for a place of my own, as my dad and stepmom will be moving to a smaller apartment in a part of Singapore that doesn't afford easy access to the main city. Now begins the long and arduous process of culling 21 years of accumulated crap into a small enough pile to fit into my own room, which I will be leasing from a landlady, as I can't afford to rent an entire flat by myself just yet. But it's still my first taste of life beyond the nest, so to speak.

This means I have very little time for myself, and very little time for Honour Amongst Thieves at the moment. I am determined to finish it properly (all scenes, proper sound effects, backing music, outlined and colored) within at least the next year, possibly two, depending on whether or not a certain work proposition falls through or not. It is a major project for one person to attempt alone, especially once I'm juggling a job at the same time, but I'd like to see it done and entered into film competitions around the world.

In the meantime, I have made some changes to things around here, in order to prepare myself better for the "professional" world. DeviantArt is now my "unofficial" website - it is, and always has been, my personal gallery first and foremost, and has up to five years of history. Many comments and criticisms made in the archives of this account no longer reflect who I am now, and so I have a new "official" website to showcase only my best work, here:

The Art of Shamine A. King

Likewise, I have recently gone through and removed many old videos from my YouTube account, which I consider to reflect poorly on who I am today. From now on my YouTube account will only be for "unofficial" projects, such as the HAT podcasts, old Clopin/AC/Amnesia videos, and other miscellaneous silly videos that I make from time to time. I now have a Vimeo account for "officially" hosting my animations, including all animatics and showreels, through to finished shorts. You may find it here:

Shamine King Animations

Unfortunately due to some uploading issues not all of the videos appear in chronological order, but those of you in countries such as Germany or Pakistan who had difficulty viewing my previous animations should now be able to watch them. Unfortunately, any miscellaneous videos on YouTube still using GEMA-blocked music (such as the Louis/James Christmas video) will still be blocked in some countries, but a quick Google search should herald some ways to bypass the system if you are so inclined.

'Cecilia', by animation from Year 2, Semester 2, should now be viewable.

My animation major required that I submit three full minutes of animation for submission, still in sketch-form at least. I have not had the opportunity to touch up some of the glaring errors that annoy me in the "final" version, but due to the aforementioned complications in my schedule lately, I think I have refrained from uploading what I do have long enough. I have already edited most of the scenes to flow better from one cut to the next, and have included more backgrounds, but will wait until I have more to show before updating the video again. In the meantime, enjoy some (FINALLY!) scenes with dialogue from Santiago de la Cruz.

The introduction sequence for HAT, for my final submission. (Unfinished and unedited)

Showreel of Art and Animations from 2012-2013

Again, I apologize for my absence ... and for this horrendously lengthy Journal Entry, but hopefully this will explain some of the changes going on around here right now. Thank you all for your support thus far, you have been instrumental in my determination to see things through, and to continue Honour Amongst Thieves beyond college. I hope that once things settle down I will be able to frequent DA more regularly again.

How exciting! A special display for HAT! Great job, Sak and congrats to your unofficial graduation! Though you sound stressed out and tired, I'm sure you're handling everything just fine and you'll settle soon. The nice thing about going through the hectic parts of life is that "ah" feeling when it's over and you can relax. Just keep moving forward. :3

Wow, with all that on your plate I can't blame you for needing to take a bit of time away from other things like DA!

I gotta say, hearing about all this makes me so excited for you! Good luck on finding some employment, and a place to live, and your career in general!

Congratulations on pretty much graduating! Ugh, reminds me that I need to look into schools or, y'know, the future, but for now uber congrats to you!

I absolutely cannot wait to see what you'll create in the future, all the hard work you've done to be where you are now is so admirable, I certainly hope I can be as accomplished as you in the semi-near future!

Congrats on graduating! I'm glad you finally get to show off HAT, even if it isn't done yet. It's great that you'll still work on it in the future, but still, I hope you find a great job that you'll love too! Good luck with adjusting to real life, and hope to see more cool stuff from you! Round of applause!

P.S. Your college looks EPIC. Can't find good-looking colleges like that unless you pay your life. Darn it America!

I studied on a special government grant, so apart from supplies I needed for my specific classes, I didn't have to pay a cent of tuition. In fact LASALLE paid me. The catch? I have to work in a Singapore-based company for the next three years, but I'm fine with this.

WOW. :wow: That's so cool! The entire tuition was covered? In America, as far as I know, even if you were really poor, you would only get financial help through scholarships and loans you'll have to pay back over the next decade or so. Otherwise, you have to figure out how to pay tuition yourself...lucky dog! :highfive:

Working in a Singapore-based company for three years is the "paying back" part of the deal, but I can leave the country whenever just so long as I pay back what they paid, so it's not as though I'm off "scott free", as it were. But having more people employed benefits the country, which is their incentive to encourage students to stick around after graduation.

Hey, real life comes first. I'm never around on the internet when I need to meet deadlines - and you need to look after yourself first! I'd rather you were gone for a little while and then back, than that you burned yourself out and got bummed out altogether.

Look after yourself, sak!

The animation course at LASALLE is four years, but the first year is "Foundation", which is a general all-around year of art. After that students choose a speciality, such as animation, which runs for another three. During the first year we're introduced to all facets of animation - 2D, 3D, traditional, digital, experimental, stop-motion, etc. - and then in second year we make a decision whether we want to specialize in either 2D or 3D animation. This decision cannot be changed in third year.

I got to skip foundation year, because I graduated with an I.B. diploma and took Higher Arts in high school.

Do not worry about it. It's completely understandable that you're in super busy mode with life and you don't need anything to stretch your stress anymore thin. Congratulations on unofficially graduating from college! When you take over the world, you'll be unstoppable.

I am so proud of you and all of your success! It's amazing that Honour Amongst Thieves got to be on special display, but not surprising because you are really good at what you do. Wish I can be there in person to see it, because it looks awesome.

Moving out is such a hassle (trying to do so myself) and I hope everything goes smoothly for you.

So, I want to say something kind of personal right now. You're one of the people who's had a major impact on a decision I've decided to do in my life. Your dedication and hard work have inspired me to save up again and go back to college. Nothing as glamorous as fashion or costuming, but I'm going for a teaching degree. (I work with special needs children on a daily basis and people say I have a way to make them really open up and be calm around me.) Don't worry, I still like to sew like an maniac in my free time. (You'll get that coat love and then some.)

So let me thank you for all you've done as your amazing self and congratulations once again!
