Louis's VA and I had a violent falling out ...JUST KIDDING!!
He's here with me, visiting Singapore. See you in a few weeks.
(BTW this whole prank was Brendan's idea. You can direct all the hatey to him.)
Working @ UbisoftNot even kidding, though my contract is only for two months so far. I was offered a unique opportunity to work alongside experts in the industry, and was recruited for concept art, illustration, and storyboarding, bouncing around to see where I might fit with my toony style. It's only been day one so far, but I'm working right alongside professionals and get to learn from them first-hand. Pretty sure I'm still reeling. Obviously I can't tell you what we're working on due to confidentiality agreements, but it's pretty cool to see all the behind-the-scenes action my own self.
Unfortunately, this does mean a significant stall in my (slow) progress on HAT, my animation-to-be. While working at LASALLE I literally spent every minute animating if I wasn't busy assisting teachers; now the only time I'll have to work on it will be when I get home, and on the weekends. Finishing the illustrations for Voltaire's upcoming children's book
LeavingI need a break.
From DeviantArt, Tumblr, WoW, TOR, all of it.
I don't like sharing aspects of my personal life anymore, but some things have happened and I need time alone. I apologize to anyone who's sent me a note in the past few weeks, whether on here or any of my other accounts; I won't be getting back to you. My Deviations are not deleted, merely hidden, but I have no intention of returning any time soon.
You've all been great.
Back at LASALLEThat's right, after two eye-opening months, my stay at Ubisoft is over (... which is a shame, because they were offering a prize to the person who could prank their colleagues the best this April Fools!).
It was a great experience; I got the chance to work on multiple projects in the company, doing everything from technical drawings, character concepts, to storyboarding and illustrations. I was constantly challenged to produce faster and better work, including some digital and matte paintings, which I still struggle with immensely. By the end of the two months I was finally getting a handle on things, but alas, all good things must come to an end. I wish I could share some of my work with you, but I am sworn to confidentiality.
I made some good friends while I was there; the art director is a friend to the animation program leader at LASALLE, and he purposefully challenged me to start practicing digital painting. I was sat next to the senior storyboard and concept ar
Life Update - HAT News, etc.Hullo my fellow Deviants,
It's about that time for a new journal entry, as a lot has happened since last I was seen lurking about this site. I have new Honour Amongst Thieves Questions and Answers podcasts, Amnesia videos, and photos, as well as news on my current job(s), and the results of :iconredeaddie:'s fantastic Louis cosplay. So how about I just start from the beginning?
Brendan Julian was over in Singapore for three weeks towards the end of my summer break, which was responsible for most of my absence. For those who don't yet know, he is the voice for Louis Despatis in my (as of yet) unfinished animation. Much fun was had. As well as dragging him all over the island and introducing him to all manner of wild and weird Asian cuisine, we also spent a lot of time at Universal Studios, Singapore, with my LASALLE besties for Livia's birthday. Brendan got to hug Reese's Pieces
Merry Christmas and SHIPS!!!I friggin' love this grey weather, like you have no idea. So I leap on any chance I get to go out into it, and as always I force :icongellyh: to come with me. Following some advice we went to the Maritime Museum in Amsterdam yesterday to see the LKJSDKLZDJLKS replica of the18th century East Indiaman Amsterdam.
Caution: Slippery when wet.
EEEEEEEEE SHIPS!!! Of course this totally counts as research for my animation major this year and everything,
The Captain gets all the best things.
Chillin' in the Captain's Cabin.
To the Captain's Command!
We found some BARRELS!!
Biggest goddamn barrels I've ever seen.
And also tried our hands at the guns.
Gellyh knows how to use a swivel cannon.
Evidently ... I don't.
But it was seriously cramped in there, especially in the guests' cabins for transporting important people.
No, I mean really, really cramped.
Fooling around top-side:
Fabulous view from up here, daaarling~
And then there was a gallery full
It's Happening!!Louis is starting to talk!
For those asking, I'm animating directly into the computer using a Wacom tablet. The animation program I'm using is TVPaint Animation 10 Pro. Super expensive so I use the school computers, but it's like the illegitimate love-child between Photoshop and Adobe After Effects without Flash's niggling tendencies to crash every ten minutes. That program is sex. <3
Meet Louis? Now that I've made you look ...
Anyone in Düsseldorf, Germany, who is going to the DoKoMi con should keep their eyes peeled for :iconmonsieurlefrereduroi: and her girlfriend, who will be dressed as Louis and James respectively this Sunday (19th). She's dressed as Louis before, and cuts an absolutely fabulous~ figure:
I thought people only cosplayed famous characters?
And I am super excited to see photos this time around, especially since she's outdoing herself yet again and making new, more exact costumes ...
Sneak-peaks, what a tease!
I am so flattered that people like my characters enough to want to cosplay them, especially when they do such a bang-up job of it. I will not be there, because I live all the way on the other side of the world in Singapore, but anyone over there do say hi! They're friendly people!

How to deal with or get feedback.Getting feedback or critiques may be hard for people.
Some people want it really bad but can't seem to get it, at least not from the people he/she is hoping for.
And other get it all the time but feel a little attacked or bullied by it.
Pretty much anyone with eyes and some intelligence is able to spot mistakes or irregularities in someone's work. This person doesn't have to be more skilled than you.
However, this person... might be wrong....
How do you judge a critique?
You initially made your artwork according to the knowledge you currently have. Leaving room for mistakes in the elements you're not trained or knowledgeable in. Or perhaps you think you know something and you are not aware that it's wrong.
When someone gives you feedback, even though it might feel incorrect. Take a little time to do some extra research on the matter.
You can ask others if they agree with someone's feedback.
You can search online (wit

IS ART SCHOOL BAD?? 0_OBTW THIS IS LONG ASS POST , BUT ENCOURAGE YOU TO READ THIS IS IF YOU ARE A PERSON CONSIDERING ART FOR A CAREER
EDIT: I ADDED NUMBER 3 IN CAUSE THAT WAS KIND OF AN IMPORTANT LESSON TOO. HAHA
Usually I am pretty quiet when it comes to the community and its dealings with drama . But I feel like I have to write my two cents about this topic.
A lot of people have been throwing around this post around about how art schools are terrible and are not worth it ya. I am sure you can find the article somewhere if you just google it . Though everyone is entitled to their own opinion I feel that I should talk about both sides of the coin when it comes to art school.
Now I have went to art school , and have done well for myself , I have worked internationally and worked for some big companies , and currently at the moment I actually teach at an art school as well.
SO THE ULTIMATE QUESTION: IS ART SCHOOL A WASTE OF TIME?
WELL THERE IS NO BLACK AND WHITE ANSWER
What I believe is that art school i

YOUR IDEAS HAVE VALUE!!I have to kind of make a post about this subject since it comes up a lot in discussions
Your art has worth! it does not need marketing or any kind of promotion . Even your ideas have value too. So companies and people trying to take advantage of such things is simply not right and we as artists need to change.
If you spend hours and hours honing your skills as an artist. Then people shouldn't assume that you are willing to give that away for free.
All the time I get a message for people asking for free work , or work that I won't get paid for now, but they will promote my website. I do not need help promoting myself. I can handle that quite well on my own. ( FUNNY PART IS I NEVER PROMOTED MY ART AT ALL I JUST DID IT AND I GOT BETTER AND MORE PEOPLE BEGAN TO LOOK AT IT MORE AND MORE, I DID ART AND PUT IT ON A WEBSITE , NOTHING MORE) People also do the kick-starter thing. They say we cannot pay but if your project gets funded we can pay you after.
LITERALLY all of these scenarios would n
A Mysterious Machine Appears: The Hunt for Gems!
Welcome everyone, to the first contest in a long while! BlackWing and I are to host this event, and maybe to put a little artistic effort in it ourselves (but of course it wouldn't allow us to win, that wouldn't be very fair, would it?)
Here are the details for the event!
You are to draw one of your characters, whether it be a creature from Life Crystals or an original character, and they are sent by the human creators of the Skitters to help search for precious gems. These gems can be rubies, sapphires, emeralds, topaz, jade and even diamond! Find the prettiest gem you lay your eyes on! For the record, this gem will lead to the Skitter you want. If you want a blue or red gem for your Skitter, then have your character look for a Sapphire, Ruby, or any gem that has those colors. You can even search for rarer gems that I haven't stated yet.
You can even have your character search for a particular type of stone or raw steel for the body.
Next, you can put a little (or l
How to win Art-contests! (+ Caldyra winners!)Let me start by saying how incredibly happy I am with all these amazing and inspiring entries! This definitely calls for doing another such contest soon!
Most of you have really tried their best and it shows! I couldn't have asked for better or more, choosing the winners among these was already aching my brains.
This journal will show the winners and the special mentions but also a bit about how to higher your changes on winning contests (maybe good for the next one).
This was my contest for those interested:
How to win contests?!
The change on winning a contest always gets smaller based on the amount of people joining in, however this doesn't mean that your work will be diminished by the numbers.
Here is a list of tips and tricks to make sure that your work gets into the top 10 !
Triple read the contest's description. Make sure you got every detail right.
