Older comic I finally got around to coloring, kind of a follow-up to this one:

This of course takes place in the fictional land where Louis and James get past their differences enough to become frenemies against the Spanish. The land that does not currently exist. Lazy backgrounds are lazy.

oh rofl... that was too good They'd probably be like this in the mid 1600s too (England and France were Allies aginst the spanish and dutch) speaking of which... louis would probably be in his element in a justaucorps from the 1660s, oh god... i wonder what James Hunter would have to say, cause of the HEAVY French Influences in England at the time.

According to my research it was actually England + Holland versus France + Spain during Queen Anne's War, and I suspect this is largely because France (esp. King Louis XIV) was unhappy with England being a Protestant country, what with King Charles II refusing to convert back to Christianity despite Louis giving him support in getting the crown back. England was very much anti-French at the time, with Captains telling their crews to "hate the French like you hate the Devil himself".

Of course you are right... But i am refering to the Anglo-Dutch wars, and a war against Spain I forget the name of that the french and english buccaneers were active with letters of marque in. Louis XIV actually didn't become an enemy of England until William III took the throne, (William was origonally Dutch but married into the Stuart Family, and Louis XIV wanted to conquer the netherlands.) The War of the spanish succession came later. the basic breakdown i've found is that Yes Louis did support charles in the Restoration, and England and France became allies, England was heavily influenced by France, because the Royale Court had been in exhile in France. Charles II reigned until about 1685 when his brother james took the throne. but he was overthrown. Louis XIV meanwhile continued to support the jobobites, The Stuart Line and 'The Pretender'. William and Mary were crowned jiontly by parliament in 1689. The war of the spanish succession wasn't until 1702. This was sort of a culture shock idea.... not so much for louis, but quite a bit for james.

I'll have to do more historical digging once I start to zero in on the final timeline, then. As best as I have it now is that James is in the Caribbean and already fighting in the name of England during the Queen Anne's War, which is where he climbs the ranks for the most part. By the time the wars are over Louis takes to the sea, his ship is commandeered by pirates, and he winds up press-ganged into their crew. He's not a captain until a while later, but the basic timeline for the majority of their escapades takes place after the Treaty of Utrecht was signed.

well the prime epoch of the golden age of pirates was like right after Queen anne's War... men like Calico Jack, Black Beard, Oliver la Bouche, and Black Sam were out of work navy sailors and Privateers, they continued in the only trade they had, plundering at sea, sailing out Of New Providence until woodes Rogers arrived and shut them down. then some went east to madagascar or Africa, looting Indiamen, and ships sailing the Trade Triangle. others stayind in the caribbean. If you need a reference, I can give advise and make recomendations for books to check out. a Big one for the pirates of this era, which was a fascanating book was called 'The Republic of Pirates' I believe it is by collin Woodard, and also has background info Queen anne's War, Politics at the time, social and economic problems and customs, besides different pirate's supposed backgrounds, etc.
