More work for my animation major this year at LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore. I'm falling behind in my submission requirements and am short several necessary landscape sketches and studies, so I'm scrounging what I can from my sketchbook and gussying it up for presentation. This is one of those attempts.

These are older drawings by now, and the first attempt at drawing Louis's ship 'Celeste', let alone a cross section, and I am still sort of futzing around with the colors. It's garish and gold-gilded everywhere, that's all I know. Because Louis is a Baroque dandy like that. There are a hundred bajillion things wrong with this and oh my god I hate drawing ships why do pirates have to live on them so much but I don't have time to nitpick right now and she doesn't even appear in the final animation so there.

Louis names her after his niece.

God, this is a lot of work. It's wonderful that you post everything here on dA so we can see what you're up to, as a lot of us are also getting into animation. For your sake, I hope this is for a background and you don't have to make the ship move! XD

This is a BEAUTIFUL ship. I absolutely love shipping from this period and I love your design. I especially like how the French 'Fleur-de-Lise' flag is emblazoned on the side of the sails. Gives a lot more character to the ship than if the whole sail was a flag or white. (It also lends to Louis's unconventional nature)

Thank you! I'm sure James would have something snippy to say about those sails.

You did quite an excellent job on the design and I love the fleur-de-lis on the sails. :)

Aw, man I hate drawing ships. They're too complicated.

I come forth once more bearing historical reference..well sorta. There are some Osprey books that you might want to look into on this subject. Not exactly the period I recall you planning on, but probably better than nothing. Also don't know how easily one can get a hold of these where you are, but for historical reference, they are the best go-to publishers. Ah, if only you were doing Napoleonic, I could just throw my Dad at you, he has lectured on the ships of that era.

Welcome!

...And I know it looks like I am a walking commercial for this publisher, but I swear I don't work for them. I just really like their books. ;p
